She Remembers the Way Back: Reconnecting to the Inner Knowing

Now that summer has fully arrived-sun high, wild flowers in full bloom and the horses covered in a layer of warmth and dust-I find myself reflecting on something that stirred quietly but profoundly this spring.

Early spring, with its soft light, new shoots, and the scent of damp earth, always feels like a sacred threshold. The forest begins to hum again, gently awakening, and this year, my two mares, Skye and Jewel, led me through that season of reawakening.

Walking past the open field each morning, Jewel would dive into the new grass with a kind of urgency-head down, focused, almost ravenous. Skye, on the other hand, who has lived on this land for almost eight years, often just stood still, eyes half-closed, as though she was listening to something deeper than hunger. It wasn’t until we stepped into the forest that I saw Skye come alive in a different way.

There, she began to forage like an old soul returning to ceremony. She carefully selected ferns, dandelion and pulled pieces of moss off trees.. Her choices felt intentional, guided by some ancient wisdom. Jewel used to be indifferent to the forest, tugging us toward the field, dismissing the ferns and undergrowth as unimportant.

But one morning this spring, something shifted.

Jewel watched Skye nibble horsetail and then move toward the dandelion leaves. There was a moment- a flicker in Jewel’s eye, a softening-and then she followed. Tentatively at first. A bite of horsetail. A pause. Another. And suddenly, it was like she remembered.

Remembered that the forest holds medicine.
Remembered that she, too, was once wild.
Remembered that she knows how to listen to the land.

Since that moment, Jewel has been different. Curious. Attentive. No longer rushing for what’s familiar. Now, she lingers to taste the forest bounty-, fiddleheads, plantain, wild raspberry leaf. It’s as if something ancient and soul-deep has awakened in her-a reclamation of a forgotten knowing.

Watching her, I thought so often of the women who come to Soul Space Coaching.

Many are returning to horses after years-sometimes decades-away. Horses were once their lifeline, a passion, a place of belonging. But life, as it does, pulled them toward responsibility, stability, and self-sacrifice. And yet, something in them begins to remember and they feel their soul stirring, calling them back to the horses.

When they arrive at the paddock to sit with the horses, breathe deeply, and feel the earth beneath them, they begin to hear their own voice again. They begin to remember not only their love for horses, but their love for themselves.

It’s a kind of wild remembering. The kind that doesn’t demand words, only presence.

So as I look back on this spring, I carry with me the image of Jewel’s lowered head, the glint of awakening in her eyes, the quiet transformation that comes when we return to what nourishes us- not just what feeds us, but what truly sustains us.
